HAÏTI'S FABULOUS CULTURE

NAIVE ART EXHIBIT

The Musée de Charlevoix presents an exhibition showcasing an important and previously unseen branch of its collection: some fifty large-scale paintings by masters of Haitian naive art. These self-taught painters deliver a vision of a dreamland, fabulous and verdant, a representation of this people with its joie de vivre and unique identity.

Earthly paradises, seascapes inhabited by mermaids, works charged with spiritual symbolism and surrealist architecture coexist with images of the country's rural and institutional life. The exhibition expresses an original vision of Haiti, carried by the imagination of artists who evolved in the wake of the Centre d'art de Port-au-Prince. Specialists consider that this collection has the quality of bringing together the outstanding works of the first generation of Haitian painters, at the origin of a veritable movement of international recognition.

For these creators, painting becomes a medium with the power to convey evidence of everyday life as well as messages from the invisible worlds.
